The City of Rochester in New York has just completed another successful summer boating season thanks to the new Port of Rochester Marina, which opened to the public in June after two and a half years of construction. Located at the confluence of Lake Ontario and the Genesee River, the $22 million project used Kebony Clear decking for the intricate series of docks and walkways that weave through the marina, creating 54 seasonal boat slipways and 30 transient slipways.

Settled along the shore of a city renowned for its retail, dining and tourist attractions, the new Port of Rochester Marina secures the city as one of the top Great Lakes destinations. This new marina provides users with all of the traditional shipping amenities, including pump-out services, a public boat launch and a small shop for boating supplies; however, it also goes beyond mere essentials, providing Wi-Fi, electricity and clean drinking water. In addition to linking the lake and river, the marina also connects with the Charlotte Pier and the Genesee River Trail System.

When planning for this project, the designers and engineers at Edgewater Resources sought a long-lasting and environmentally friendly material for the promenade. After using Kebony wood in 2014 for a similar project in the Marina at Harbor Shores, the team knew it was high performing, rot resistant and perfect for this type of application. Developed in Norway, the patented Kebony technology permanently modifies the properties of sustainable softwood, giving it the same characteristics as tropical hardwoods, including high durability and dimensional stability. Kebony wood’s hardwearing features make it the ideal material for marina decking, which will constantly be exposed to water and the elements. Over time, the wood will transform from a deep brown colour to a delicate silver-grey patina, maintaining its durability and structural qualities while further enhancing the beauty of this picturesque location.

Greg Weykamp at Edgewater Resources commented: “The marina is set on one of the most beautiful lake locations in the state of New York, so we wanted a decking material that could complement the beauty of the scenery and also stand up to the unpredictable weather. Kebony’s stability and resistance to rot make it the perfect material for a wet environment, and its aesthetics are unmatched.”

Andy Hehl, Manager at Kebony US added: “The Port of Rochester Marina is not only a centre for seasonal activities such as boating but it is also an important source of economic growth for the city. We’re thrilled that Kebony can contribute to the longevity and success of this project as the principle building material for the marina, and that Kebony will remain part of the Rochester boating community for years to come.”
